The Governance of Extractive Industries (Goxi) Webinar Series is a partnership between the World Bank – UNDP Goxi platform, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, and the Convention on Biological Diversity’s National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans Forum.
This learning series comprises webinars focusing on environmental governance and social and environmental conflicts linked to mining, oil, and gas.

1 - Mining, Women's Participation, and Voice: Case Studies from Colombia

This webinar was held in June 2019 and brought together over 220 participants from 41 countries. It was organized by the EGP in collaboration with UNDP's Learning for Nature Programme. The webinar looked at how governments can strengthen their policy responses to gender impacts and gaps related to mining, to improve development outcomes from the sector. The webinar shared practical approaches to addressing gender gaps in mining. It drew insights from two case studies from Colombia, in artisanal gold mining, and coal mining, of initiatives that are effective in addressing key gender issues linked to the sector, while highlighting good practices in Colombian public policy related to mining, from a gender perspective.

This webinar also introduced initial topics from a new training on gender, governance and mining that is in development, and seek feedback from participants on how the training can be refined and delivered most effectively.

2 - Mainstreaming Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services And Human Rights Into The Mining Sector

This webinar brought together 269 participants from across the world. It explored strategies to mitigate negative effects of mining on human rights, presenting the ecosystem services framework. It also discussed environmental licensing functions and tasks of government institutions at the national and regional level. Using Colombia as a case study, the webinar analyzed the role of government agencies in promoting good governance and preventing environmental harm in the mining sector.

3 - Management Of Mining Waste And Design For Closure

This webinar provided an overview of mining waste management, with a focus on the need to ensure safe and orderly closure once mining has ceased. The webinar brought together around 100 participants.
Case studies from Mozambique and Brazil were used as a starting point to share experiences. An important case study presented in the webinar was the Mariana dam break, one of Brazil’s worst environmental disasters.

A case study from Mongolia was presented, exploring the role thats community monitoring plays in conflict reduction and mitigation.

This webinar provided an overview of meaningful stakeholder engagement and why it matters. It explored some of the tools that can be used to develop effective strategies to integrate stakeholder engagement into the environmental governance of the mining sector.

This webinar brought together 100 participants from 23 countries, focusing on the global landscape of social and environmental standards, grievance mechanisms and their role in preventing and addressing conflicts in the mining, oil and gas industries. The English webinar discussed the Oyu Tolgoi mine case in Mongolia, where herders reached a historic agreement with one of the world’s largest copper mines. The Spanish webinar explored the Yanacoacha case in Peru.
