Participatory Environmental Monitoring Committees in Latin America

On October 2018, more than 40 participants from 13 countries gathered in Panama to share their perspectives and experiences at the EGP convened Regional Workshop on Participatory Environmental Governance for Sustainable Natural Resources Management in the Latin American and Caribbean Region.

The workshop focused on regional experiences with Participatory Environmental Monitoring Committees from Argentina, Bolivia, Panama, and Peru.

Involving citizens in the environmental monitoring process is a powerful tool to reduce environmental risks and social conflicts. Establishing Participatory Environmental Monitoring Committees (PEMCs) gives citizens and communities voice and power to influence decisions that affect their lives and their future.

Case studies and findings from all countries were presented and discussed, and a formal report on the four countries’ experiences with this innovative approach to environmental governance, transparency, and multi-stakeholder collaborative process will be launched in April 2019.
